Kevin McHale Has Strong Words for Fans Pushing Glee ‘Curse’ Theory

Glee star Kevin McHale slams fans’ “diabolical” chatter on X who kept pushing the long-running “Glee curse” theory. The actor reacted to rumors following the deaths of three former Glee cast members.

Kevin McHale addressed Glee curse rumors on X

The actor, who played Artie Abrams throughout Glee’s six-season run, unloaded on X on Wednesday, July 29. He hit back furiously at fans who claimed that the show is “cursed” after several cast members died as part of a twisted conspiracy theory.

“Let me log off today because the way too many of you talk about real people who have passed as a ‘sacrifice’ or a ‘curse’ in regards to a TV show is fing diabolical and untethered from any sort of humanity or reality,” McHale wrote on X. Without softening the message, he added, “Get f**ked.”

He concluded his message by highlighting how he wants his friends remembered. “We choose to remember them for how bright they shone and how much joy they brought into our lives,” he said, “not for a buzzword people use on social media.”

The “curse” theory has circulated online for years. It gained renewed attention after the 2023 docuseries “The Price of Glee” revisited the show’s string of tragedies. Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died of a drug overdose in 2013 at age 31. Mark Salling died by suicide in 2018, shortly after pleading guilty to possession of child sexual abuse material. Naya Rivera drowned in 2020 after saving her young son during a boating accident.

The docuseries also noted that in addition to the show’s cast, some members of its crew also died, further fueling the online superstition.

Some fans supported the actor in the comments. They argued that turning someone’s death into a conspiracy theory based on a TV show can erase the fact that they were actual people with families, friends, and lives beyond the show.

Three Glee cast members have died since the show premiered in 2009—all for different reasons.
