Kelly Ripa revealed how she handled her wardrobe while filming Live remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The longtime host said working from home allowed her to dress only for what viewers could see on camera.
During the Aug. 20 episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, Ripa described herself as a “homebody” and recalled enjoying the period when she could host the morning show without leaving home.
Kelly Ripa says she filmed pandemic episodes of ‘Live’ without pants while eating breakfast
Ripa, 55, said her at-home setup required little preparation below the camera frame, according to RadarOnline.com.
“I loved doing the show without pants on,” she said. “Guess what? While you were watching the show and we were shooting from a computer screen, I had a blouse on top and nothing on the bottom.”
At the time, Ryan Seacrest was still Ripa’s co-host. The pair hosted the program remotely in 2020 as pandemic restrictions changed television production.
Ripa also used commercial breaks to eat breakfast. She said she kept a bowl of Grape-Nuts on her lap while filming and returned to it whenever the show went off air.
“I would be Grape-Nutting it, and then, back to air,” Ripa said. “It was great!”
Her preference for staying comfortable also came up when she discussed restaurants. Ripa said she prefers dim lighting and clothing that does not require her to dress up.
“I want it dark like a bat cave,” she said. “I want to go in there, I want people to really struggle to see. A candle. I want to be able to wear comfortable clothes.”
She then summed up that preference by saying, “In other words, I want to stay at home and eat in my bedroom.”
Ripa’s husband, Mark Consuelos, spent much of that period away from home because of work in Canada. Consuelos recently said strict pandemic protocols meant he saw Ripa for only 19 days over 10 months.
When he eventually returned, Consuelos discovered that Ripa had started sleeping on his usual side of their bed.
“My side of the bed, she had taken my side of the bed,” he recalled. “I said, ‘This is my side of the bed.’ And she said, ‘You don’t live here.’”
The couple eventually kept the new arrangement and permanently switched sides.
