MasterChef Judge Explains His 16-Year Gordon Ramsay Bitter Feud

Marcus Wareing has opened up about the breakdown of his friendship with Gordon Ramsay, more than a decade after the chefs stopped speaking.

Wareing worked closely with Ramsay across his restaurant business and became his first employee. Their professional relationship also developed into a friendship. However, things changed after Wareing left his position as head chef at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant in 2008 to establish his own venture.

Wareing said neither chef deliberately caused the Gordon Ramsay feud. Instead, he described their separation as something that developed as their careers moved in different directions.

“No one facilitated anything in a fallout. It just naturally happened,” Wareing said during a recent podcast interview.

Looking back at their working relationship, the MasterChef judge said he once wanted to reach the same professional position as Ramsay. As Ramsay’s company expanded, Wareing began to see his own place within the business differently.

“I wanted to be in [Gordon’s] shoes and you can’t be in his shoes, they are too big,” he said. “I was his first employee but the company got bigger and bigger and I could see that I was a fish in a pond.”

Wareing also recalled Ramsay speaking to him about the way he managed his work. Despite the problems that eventually separated them, Wareing said Ramsay always made time for him.

“That was one of the loveliest things about Gordon – he always gave you his time,” Wareing said.

The pair went without speaking for 16 years before reconnecting earlier this year.

Their reunion also brought another professional collaboration. Ramsay’s production company will work on Wareing’s upcoming BBC Two series, which does not yet have a confirmed title and is expected to air in 2027.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to work alongside Gordon again. It’s been many years since we last shared a kitchen, and I can’t wait to get started,” Wareing said.

The new program will focus on helping chefs improve through simple cooking techniques while also recreating dishes connected to personal memories and loved ones.

The project marks Wareing and Ramsay’s first collaboration since the end of their Gordon Ramsay 16-year-long feud.
