Simon Helberg gave fans a disappointing update about returning as Howard Wolowitz. The actor said he could not imagine playing the character again. Helberg starred as Howard throughout The Big Bang Theory‘s 12-season run. However, he appeared more open to a future reunion with his former castmates.
Simon Helberg says he can’t imagine ever returning as Howard Wolowitz
Helberg discussed his famous sitcom role during The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast. He appeared alongside host Jessica Radloff for the August 31 episode. The actor reflected on his years playing the eccentric aerospace engineer.
However, Helberg admitted returning to the character seems difficult now. He said, “It’s hard for me to imagine ever playing the character again.” The actor explained that his perspective has changed considerably over time.
Helberg said he felt like he had changed significantly since the sitcom ended. The Big Bang Theory concluded its successful television run in 2019. Seven years later, the actor struggled to picture himself stepping back into Howard’s shoes.
“It really is. Like, I just don’t know,” Helberg explained. “I feel like I’ve changed a lot and everything has shifted.” He added that imagining a return felt difficult.
Still, Helberg did not completely dismiss another connection with his former castmates. He said a reunion involving the surviving stars could be intriguing. However, he suggested that more time needed to pass first.
“Having a reunion, like, sitting down with everybody, I could see that being intriguing,” Helberg said. He added that a natural moment could eventually bring everyone together. For now, though, he remained uncertain about when that could happen.
Helberg also joked about television’s growing obsession with reunions and reboots. He found the trend amusing because it emerged around The Big Bang Theory‘s ending. The show had only just finished when revivals became increasingly popular.
Meanwhile, several former cast members have already revisited their sitcom characters. Mayim Bialik, Kaley Cuoco, Melissa Rauch and Brian Thomas Smith appeared in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Helberg, however, has not joined them as Howard.
For now, fans should not expect Howard Wolowitz to return soon.
