She participated in the annual gala benefiting the Women’s Cancer Research Fund through An Unforgettable Evening. Being candid about her story to raise awareness, the star opened up about embracing her mastectomy scars after participating in the SKIMS campaign.
Detailing how she changed her perspective on survivorship, she told Access Hollywood about the acceptance she felt with fellow breast cancer survivors. She confessed, “It’s such an incredibly healing thing to be connected to so many other women who have had breast cancer.” The actor explained that the reason behind sharing her cancer journey was to raise awareness for the lifetime risk assessment test. Besides, she wanted every woman to be able to access the test and save their life.
Munn went through a double mastectomy and various surgeries and was always open about it. She admitted her scars were a source of emotional complexities and vulnerability. Moreover, she was not comfortable showing them to the world. However, the SKIMS campaign changed her perception. Rather than hiding the scars, she chose to reveal them.
The actor admitted to canceling her laser treatment, explaining that she wanted to put her scars out there and embrace them. She said, “The response from not just the world embracing it and people who haven’t had this type of surgery, but especially from the other women who have these scars and the children of the people who have these scars and they have seen their mothers going through this, and now these scars, at least on me, I’m proud of them now.”
