Donald Trump surprised Kate Middleton with an unexpected compliment during the U.S. President and Melania Trump’s welcome ceremony for the second state visit to the U.K. The Princess of Wales and her husband, Prince William, greeted the couple when they arrived on the grounds of Windsor Castle on September 17. The exchange took place moments after Trump and his wife stepped off Marine One.
The President first shook William’s hand and continued to greet Kate. This is when Trump told the princess, “You’re beautiful, so beautiful,” while she smiled politely and received the compliment. The British royal couple also greeted the First Lady and then guided them to the castle. Rob Shuter‘s report has now suggested that Trump’s compliment to Kate received mixed reactions.
While some reportedly called it a respectful move, the moment was awkward to others, considering the welcome was a formal ceremony. A source told Shuter that “Complimenting a royal like that” when the cameras were on them was “unusual to say the least.” Another insider continued to praise Kate’s reception. They said, “She handled it exactly as expected,” which was “with grace.”
For the welcome, the Princess of Wales was wearing a gorgeous burgundy coatdress. Kate wore a matching hat with a veil. She further coordinated the look with a pair of dark brown pointed-toe pumps. Later, Kate looked every bit a princess in a golden silk gown for the state banquet. King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted the dinner for U.S. President Donald Trump and Melania Trump.
