King Charles probably got a bit more than he bargained for when he visited the world’s oldest person. During a visit to celebrate her recent 116th birthday, Ethel Caterham recounted her memories of when Charles was given his title of prince – and her comments seemed to make him blush.
King Charles was told by the world’s oldest living person that “all the girls were in love” with him
Ethel Caterham became the oldest living person in the world in April following the death of Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas. The Brazilian nun was 116 years old.
To mark her 116th birthday in August, Ethel had a small celebration with her family. But it obviously wasn’t exciting enough for Ethel – she said she would’ve swapped the party for a meeting with King Charles.
Clearly her comments made it back to Buckingham Palace. Because Charles traveled to Surrey for a visit last week. During the meeting, Ethel recalled watching Charles be given the title of prince by Queen Elizabeth in 1969.
She told the monarch: “I remember when your mother crowned you in Caernarfon Castle.” Charles was clearly impressed by Ethel’s memory, as he turned to someone off camera and said it was “fascinating”.
Ethel’s memories didn’t stop there. She noted that “all the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you.” The King laughed at the comment, clearly a little embarrassed.
Ethel’s granddaughter then added: “You were saying that the other day, weren’t you? You said, ‘Prince Charles was so handsome. All the girls were in love with him.’ A true prince – and now the King.”
To which Charles replied: “Yes, well, all that’s left of him anyway.”
The King made similarly bashful comments while visiting fellow cancer patients this month.
