Emily Blunt Reveals How Dick Van Dyke Made Colin Firth Cry on Mary Poppins Returns Set

Colin Firth may be a stoic English gentleman, but it turns out he does have a soft side. Emily Blunt recently recounted the time the actor was brought to tears on the set of a movie. The cause? Dick Van Dyke tap dancing on a table.

Emily shared about the rare display of emotion from Colin at the premiere of her new movie. At the event in LA on Monday, the actress recalled an encounter while working on 2018 film Mary Poppins Returns.

She told People: “I will never forget Dick Van Dyke leaping onto the desk tap dancing,” Blunt tells PEOPLE. “And Rob Marshall [director] had said that Lin-Manuel and I should help him up.”

She continued: “He had to go onto the chair and onto the desk, and we were there to help him up, and he literally pushed our hands away, and was up there, and it made everyone cry.”

She revealed even always-composed Colin was touched: “Even Colin Firth, who refuses to show emotion, ever, wept watching him. It was just incredible.”

Dick Van Dyke aced the dancing scene in the Mary Poppins sequel. In his role as the son of banker Mr. Dawes Sr (who he played in Mary Poppins), he announces he “still has a few steps left in me” before climbing onto the table and performing. The legendary actor was in his early 90s at the time. He turns 100 later this year.

Emily is currently starring alongside Dwayne Johnson in The Smashing Machine. The movie tells the story of legendary MMA fighter Mark Kerr, exploring his rise, struggles, and personal battles outside the ring.

The actress recently slammed the use of AI in Hollywood.
