Charlie Hunnam has just played one of the most disturbing characters of his career – 50s serial killer Ed Gein. Unsurprisingly, his girlfriend probably wasn’t thrilled with the idea of sharing a home with someone locked into his twisted mindset. In a new interview, Charlie explained how long-term partner Morgana has set some ground rules for their relationship.
Charlie Hunnam’s girlfriend Morgana McNelis had a simple rule for his Monster role as Ed Gein
Charlie’s latest role was always going to be challenging given that he portrays a murderer and grave robber who made household items out of human remains.
Thankfully, his partner of 20 years Morgana McNelis made one key rule about shaking off his characters.
The actor told E! News: “She got frustrated with me showing up and being a bit of a shell after doing a role. So, she said to me, probably about 10 years ago, ‘Here’s the rules of engagement: Go do your work. Be as selfish as you need to be, but then take some time, because when you get back, you better be ready to see me.’ Which is completely fair and really lovely.”
So, after playing highly disturbed killer Ed Gein in Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Charlie took some time to himself.
He explained: “I take a week, at least, however long I need once I finish. This time was the most extreme decompression, because I was in Chicago, which is close to where Ed Gein lived in Wisconsin. So I drove up and spent the day and visited his grave and spent some time with him, which was a healing way to say goodbye and put a full stop at the end of the thing.”
