Seeing fear and vulnerability can serve as a good lesson to your kids.
That’s the message Michelle Obama is hoping to send to her two children. The former First Lady says that her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, could learn a lot from seeing their parents fail. Throughout their childhood, the girls mainly witnessed successes from their parents, including their father, former US President Barack Obama.
Before those days, though, the pair had plenty of struggles, which, looking back, helped mold the former President and First Lady into better people.

Sometimes you have to learn to lose before you can win. That’s a common saying in sports circles and one that Michelle thinks is very powerful. On the podcast IMO, which she co-hosts with her brother Craig, Michelle discusses the benefits of failing.
“Failure isn’t a bad thing for kids to see in their parents,” Michelle said. The good thing about that, according to her, is that “It gives, I’ve found, them permission to have those same emotions.”
There were some failures in Barack and Michelle’s lives that their children were too young to grasp fully. Barack lost a congressional bid years ago, while Michelle previously failed the bar.
The New York Times Bestselling author says it’s more important than ever for her and Barack to take their children down those emotional paths. Seeing your parents fail, according to Michelle, can become a compelling teaching moment. Michelle admitted back in April that Barack was not financially stable when they first met.
Two years ago, Michelle achieved more success, winning a Grammy Award for Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording. That was her second Grammy.
Barack has won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Narrator and previously captured the Nobel Peace Prize.
