Marshawn Kneeland’s Family Break Silence After His Death by Suicide

The family of Marshawn Kneeland is speaking for the first time since his suicide.

On Wednesday, the Dallas Cowboys defensive end was found dead in Frisco, Texas. He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been involved in a police chase that night, reportedly fleeing his vehicle after it crashed in Frisco, just a few minutes away from the Cowboys’ headquarters.

The 24-year-old was found near his car in the early morning of November 6. Marshawn was in his second NFL season, playing in Dallas’ 27-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night.

The football world and, of course, those closest to him 2024 are reeling from this devastating news. One of Marshawn’s relatives, Nicole Kneeland-Woods, issued a statement on Facebook following the tragedy.

Nicole confirmed his death, adding: “We are devastated by this tremendous loss and are still processing the depth of our grief.” It goes on to say that: “He was kind, determined, humble, and full of love.” They ask to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

Marshawn scored his first NFL touchdown on Monday, recovering a blocked punt for a major score. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said on Thursday that it’s a tragic loss, adding that he hurts for Marshawn’s family, girlfriend and all of his teammates.

The native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was the 56th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. He played his college football at Western Michigan in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). He was named to the Second-team All-MAC.

Marshawn’s mother died of an undisclosed illness in February 2024. Her death came just a couple of months before the NFL Draft. He carried his mother’s ashes with him in a necklace at all times.

During his professional career, Marshawn played 18 games total, with 15 solo tackles and one quarterback sack. His net worth in 2025 was estimated to be $1.3 million.
