A man who rushed Ariana Grande at the Wicked: For Good premiere in Singapore last Thursday has been jailed. A court in Singapore this week found Johnson Wen guilty of being a public nuisance over the high-profile incident. He was sentenced to nine days in jail.
Ariana Grande was rushed on the Wicked: For Good red carpet
To recap, Ariana was attacked by a fan as she walked the Wicked: For Good red carpet in Singapore. The fan jumped over the barrier and ran past security to reach the actor, who plays Glinda the Good Witch. Ariana’s co-stars, Cynthia Erivo and Michelle Yeoh, stepped in to help protect her, and the attacker was eventually removed by security.
The fan was later revealed to be a 26-year-old man from Australia: Johnson Wen. He posted several Instagram Stories of the incident, as well as a video to his main grid. Elsewhere on his social media pages – where he describes himself as a “troll” – there’s evidence of similar incidents, including a video of him jumping on stage at a Katy Perry concert.
At his trial in Singapore this week, the social media prankster was unrepresented and pleaded guilty. Per the BBC, prosecutors sought a week’s jail for Johnson and argued that he is a “serial intruder” who posts about his behavior to gain online fame. During mitigation, the 26-year-old told the judge that he would “not do it again.”
Despite that, Johnson was handed a nine-day jail sentence. This is pretty light, considering that under Singapore’s public nuisance laws, he could have been jailed for up to three months, fined up to $1,537, or both.
Ariana is yet to comment on the incident.
