After following Teen Mom train wrecks Farrah Abraham and Jenelle Evans, it's refreshing to read about a Teen Mom star who has worked hard to turn her life around and learned from her mistakes. I am proud of Amber Portwood for making the decisions she has to make a better life for herself and Leah.

In her first interview since being released from prison on November 4, Amber talked to In Touch about her pill addiction, prison life, and future plans.

"Before prison, I never thought about Leah," admitted Amber. "I was addicted to drugs and didn't care about anything else. Prison saved my life – and gave me a second chance at being a mother." Note to Jenelle: the picture above is what a second chance as a mom looks like, not a positive pregnancy test.

Amber opened up about her time in prison, saying, "It felt like a nightmare. Feeling humiliated and vulnerable, you literally have nothing and walk around like a zombie. There were times I reached a breaking point, but I knew the only person who could get me out of there was me."

While in prison, Amber earned her GED, went through drug rehab, and taught anger management to other prisoners.  "That was a big accomplishment," she said of the teaching experience, and now her future plans include going to college and opening her own rehab facility. "I want to help people so they don't go through what I went through."

Amber went on to say that the pain she went through in prison was worth it, adding, "I was at my lowest after I signed away my rights to Leah. I remember thinking, 'What the hell am I worth anymore?' I've learned from my mistakes – and I feel confident as a mom now."

While reconnecting, it was important to Amber for Leah to understand that her mom is healthy now and never going to leave her again. "When I promised her that, I could see relief all over her face,"  she shared.  "That's when my life with her began again."
