Sister Wives Recap: Their Day In Court

sister wives adoption family photo

Last night’s Sister Wives continued the very anti-climatic adoption adventures of the Brown clan. The adults converge on the cul-de-sac to head to their attorney’s office. Kody Brown explains for the eighty-seventh time why he’s adopting Robyn’s biological children is so important. Robyn is concerned that her kids may have to take the stand in family court and that they won’t realize just how emotional it will be for the grown-ups. Meri discusses her conflicting feelings both before and during the divorce process from Kody. She admits that she’s had some surprising revelations she’s determined to keep hidden for now–Meri wants her focus to be on the adoption.

Madison has an announcement, and she wants to meet with her dad, Janelle, and Christine. She explains that she’s already told her mom her big news, she wants to share it with her father and Christine. She states that while she loves Meri and Robyn, she has a special bond with Christine who was her stay-at-home mom. Madison begins by telling Kody that he’s going to be a grandfather. Stunned, Kody and Christine are silent long enough for Madison to assure them she was just joking. She’s in love, and it’s with someone the family knows. When Madison utters his name, “Caleb Brush,” Christine tackles her from across the room. She LOVES that boy! It’s sweet to see how happy Madison is as well. He’s the brother of her aunt, but not a blood relative. Caleb’s sister was Kody’s late brother’s wife. Christine wants to know if they are going to get married. Kody wants to pump the brakes. Isn’t Caleb ten years older than Madison? Madison reminds her father he’s eleven years older than her mother. She then calls Meri and Robyn over to share her excitement. It is hands down the happiest we’ve seen Meri this season.

Not wanting to stray too far from the most important subject ever–the adoption–Robyn and Kody explain to Dayton that at fifteen, he’s able to sign the paperwork himself. They race him off to the attorney’s office. Did anyone hear Robyn introduce him to the lawyer as David? He is understandably stressed and confused at the thought of having to go in the judge’s chambers at the hearing, which must only be heightened by his Asperger Syndrome. However, he wants to be a legal part of the Brown family, and Robyn snaps pictures as Dayton signs. He feels like executing a legal document is a step towards adulthood.

Janelle is both anxious and excited about the following day’s adoption hearing. Well, look–Madison’s in a sorority! Janelle’s kids strike me as the most grounded, and Savanah is just precious. Christine is trying to distract herself from any concerns about the ruling by becoming the final say in everyone’s outfit of choice for the hearing. They have to be ready for a big family photograph. Christine then decides to act out the adoption process with Truely’s dolls. Truely is confused. Aren’t parents supposed to work and not play? Not in this family, kid. Can Christine tell me what kind of happy pills she’s taking? The evening before the hearing, Kody dines with Robyn and their kids. He tells the crew to mind their manners as Dayton questions the logistics. Kody reveals that the hearing takes place on the two-year anniversary of his brother’s death, and he feels like his brother’s had an angelic hand in the family’s present circumstances.

The morning of the hearing, everyone is buzzing with excitement. Is it me, or are Robyn’s daughters a little more silly acting than the rest? I am not saying anything bad about them–they are sweet girls, but they seem starved for attention. Kody teaches Dayton to tie a tie, and the older children note that nothing really changes from their viewpoint as they have always considered the three to be their actual siblings. The only one not riding a high is Meri who is once again holed up in her home office, surfing the Internet, avoiding phone calls, and quietly musing that it’s been a long process. Not surprisingly, the Browns are running late, so the family is filing into the courtroom as Robyn and Kody are being sworn under oath. Is Christine going to sit down? Nope. Doesn’t look like it. The attorney questions Robyn and Kody, and the judge is pretty much, “Congratulations!” He invites the kids to take pictures with their new dad in front of the courtroom. Janelle is sitting behind the pair just beaming. Meri skulks around reminding herself that her divorce never had anything to do with her relationship with Kody. It was all about the kids getting adopted.
