After battling a fast-moving form of breast cancer, Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland just endured another fight. Her daughter, Brooke Hyland, shared via TikTok that her mom had to undergo open heart surgery this week. Her doctors discovered a leaky valve, and they had to go in to fix it.

Kelly first opened up about her breast cancer diagnosis in 2024. Last summer, she shared a picture of herself ringing the bell after completing her first round of chemo. However, Brooke explained how the celebrations quickly faded when doctors discovered another issue.
“Unfortunately, right after that, she got news that she needs to get open heart surgery,” Brooke explained.
She continued, “They are hoping to go in robotically, but if they’re unable to reach her heart, then they’ll have to go in the traditional way.”
According to Brooke, her mom’s heart was “leaking” because one of its valves didn’t close properly. Her doctors were having trouble determining why, with some theorizing that the issue had been lingering for years. Another medical team suggested that it could have been a side effect of the breast cancer. Either way, Brooke said that it was the cancer screenings that detected the heart issue, signifying a small blessing in this painful journey.
Kelly’s open heart surgery happened on Wednesday, June 25. In a late-night post, Brooke jumped back on TikTok to share an update with her fans. Kelly’s procedure was a success, and she’s currently recovering from surgery in the ICU.
“She’s out of surgery and it was successful,” the Dance Moms alum confirmed. “The doctors said it went smoothly, and it was able to be done robotically, which is something she really hoped for. She is truly the strongest person I know.”
