On June 24, a Vanderpump Rules alum got his big TV moment on America’s Got Talent. Tom Sandoval and The Most Extras auditioned for Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Mel B and Howie Mandel.
“For me, the vocals weren’t great, Tom,” Simon said after the performance. “I’m going to be honest with you. However, not everyone comes on this show to get a record deal. Sometimes, it’s about being true to who you are. I’m going to say yes.”
Despite the vocals not being up to American Idol standards, the judges all enjoyed the band’s cover of A-ha’s Take On Me. They appreciated the “energy” of the performance, and Tom got four yeses, moving on in the competition.

Afterwards, Tom spoke to Us Weekly about the audition. “He said the vocals could use a little work. But, you know, that’s great. I mean, Simon hears people that are comparable to, like, Celine Dion, and they sing incredibly well. Of course, I would expect some healthy criticism from him,” Sandoval said.
“Obviously, it was so nerve-wracking to go on that stage,” he added. “I mean, you’re performing in front of Simon Cowell … the guy who’s famously destroyed people on stage.”
Fortunately, the judges all seemed to like Tom. We’ll see how he fares when it comes to the live shows and he has to win America’s hearts to get votes. There are still a lot of people out there who hold a grudge against Tom for what he did to Ariana Madix.
Not only is AGT a dream come true for Tom, but he’s grateful for the chance to showcase the talents of his backup band. “At a point in my life, [this group was] the only thing I had keeping me going … and it really saved me in a lot of ways,” he recalled. “I feel like it saved me.”
When asked what he would do with the $1 million prize if he should win the competition, Tom played coy. “Look, there are so many talented people out there that are auditioning,” he responded. “I think it’s just taking it one step of step at a time. I’m just so grateful to be there [and] I’m honored to be among such great, amazing talent. So to me, that’s the biggest win out of anything.”
