RHOC Season 19 Could Be Called Boring; It Might Just Be a Slow Burn

Let’s be honest, Orange County, we’re rooting for you. After nearly two decades of champagne-fueled chaos, plastic surgery reveals, and friendship-ending beach parties, the Real Housewives of Orange County has earned its spot in the Bravo Hall of Fame. But if you’ve tuned into Season 19 expecting fireworks from the jump, well, you’re not alone in feeling like someone forgot to light the match.

So far, this season feels more like a sleepy brunch than a tequila-soaked dinner from hell. Are the women just pacing themselves? Or is the OC running dangerously low on drama? Let’s break down what’s going on and why fans are still holding out hope for a second-half glow-up.

RHOC Season 19 gets off to a slow start

We’re not saying it’s going to be bad. We’re just saying the premiere is going to set the entire season up. Moving slowly makes sense. Season 18 showed Shannon Beador up to her neck in DUI issues, and Jenn Pedranti’s love story couldn’t be beat. During the season premiere, we had a few passive-aggressive lunch dates and the usual shade-throwing scenes. The tension is there for sure. And the scandal is ready to burst at the seams. Personally, I think I wanted Season 19 to jump in head first, but logically, I know that isn’t how it’s done. The season opened with everyone, and I do mean everyone, turning on Katie Ginella. But the newest season had me in my feelings more than usual.  Where’s the moment that makes you pause the episode just to text your group chat, “Did you SEE that?!”

Season 19 kicked off with the returning core, including Heather Dubrow, Emily Simpson, Gina Kirschenheiter, and Tamra Judge. All of them are trying to find their footing again after a rocky Season 18. But instead of jumping in with high-stakes drama, the ladies laid down a road map to the drama which I expect will come later. Heather’s back to juggling real estate and Botox, Gina’s working on herself (again), and Emily is dealing with major family issues. It’s fine. It’s just not fun yet. Even the confessionals feel subdued this year. The snark is low, the glam is a little too polished, and the stakes feel more like “pass the Pinot” than “storm out of the party.” Maybe the cast is playing it safe, or maybe Bravo is trying to ease us into deeper drama later, but so far, it’s providing background noise.

Season 19 RHOC is just getting started

Okay, as a Bravo fan, we know that every Real Housewives season has its filler episodes. Season 29’s trailer has promised viewers a lot, including a chaotic New Orleans trip, a scandalous rumor, and the return of Gretchen Rossi. And I know I’m getting ahead of my hold, but I just wanted a bigger bang for my buck out of the premiere. The premiere has already given fans a lot to work with. Emily opened up about her son, Luke’s, newly diagnosed eating disorder. ARFID is an eating disorder characterized by a limited intake of food in terms of either the volume or variety of foods consumed.

Tamra has also returned to the series, but is more subdued. The OG is going through a lot currently, including dealing with Teddi Mellencamp’s cancer as well as intense personal therapy. I think the issue is that we’re not used to seeing the Real Housewives of Orange County cast so calm in a premiere. But don’t worry, the girls will heat up soon enough. With the return of Gretchen, it is all but promised that drama is on the way. There are hints of tension between Katie and the group, some whispers about Heather’s Hollywood attitude, and a couple of cryptic confessional comments that suggest a feud is brewing. But so far, we’re still simmering. Let’s not forget, RHOC has given us some of the most iconic Bravo moments of all time. So expectations are high.

RHOC is Just Evolving

There’s a theory floating around among Real Housewives of Orange County fans. Maybe Season 19 isn’t boring at all. Maybe it’s maturing. Hear us out. The cast is older, wiser (debatable), and more image-conscious than ever. There are less “That’s my opinion” moments and more talking. It’s not chaos. It’s a compromise. It could very well mean that gone are the days of Vicki Gunvalson screaming in a van or Tamra tossing wine in someone’s face. These women are more brand-aware now, and with Bravo cameras rolling, they’re not about to risk a scandal that might tank their next sponsored collagen deal.

But here’s the thing, fans know that these women will deliver. So even though I’m personally wishing the premiere was a bigger hit, I know the good is yet to come. As usual, Real Housewives of Orange County fans came for the drama, the betrayal, the wildly inappropriate theme parties. We just want to see someone accuse someone else of being fake while wearing $900 sunglasses and sipping a skinny margarita. The key takeaway for Season 19 is patience. Because all that is coming down the pipeline.

The Real Housewives of Orange County is available to stream on Peacock and Hayu in the UK and Ireland.
