The Love Island USA Season 7 finale had plenty of drama, thanks to a shocking final date twist with Huda Mustafa and Chris Seeley. Some fans were already shocked that Huda and Chris made it to the finals over more established couples. But no one could have predicted how disastrous their final date would be. Here’s what went down, and how the final date made Love Island history.
Love Island USA’s Huda and Chris’ final date had an unprecedented twist
Trouble was already brewing between Huda and Chris, and it came to a head the night before their final date. When the Islanders had a pillow fight, Chris bumped Huda’s nose, causing her to put on a bandage since she recently had a rhinoplasty. Then, she wanted to cuddle, but he wanted to sleep. It was a culmination of their intimacy and communication issues.
On the date itself, Huda and Chris tried to discuss their issues, but it went horribly. She kept interrupting him, and he was clearly done. But he left the choice up to her. Just as she was contemplating what to do, a singer appeared out of nowhere to perform Moon River. Talk about the worst timing!
Once the song ended, Huda told Chris they should just be friends. He was relieved. And said that, no, they wouldn’t continue to at least be friendly after this. He initially walked away from their date, which took place on a floating platform in the water. When he returned, Huda asked if he would carry her, like he did when they arrived to the date. He said no, resulting in a sad shot of Huda taking off her shoes, pouring an extra glass of champagne, and walking out alone.
I don’t think I’ve seen a more awkward, uncomfortable, and cringe-worthy final date on this show. Viewers compared it to something out of The White Lotus, a show that specializes in awkward moments and cringe-inducing humor.
How Huda and Chris’ Season 7 final date compares to previous seasons
We’ve never seen a final date as disastrous as this on Love Island USA. The closest I can think of is last season, when Nicole Jacky didn’t return Kendall Washington’s I love you. But she eventually said it in her final vows. Ultimately, those two broke up when the show wrapped, after someone leaked revenge porn of Kendall.
There was a previous couple who broke up on the final date on Love Island UK Season 7. That year, Liberty Poole officially called it quits with Jake Cornish on their boat date. With their relationship over, Liberty and Jake both decided to leave the show.
The big difference is that Love Island UK has contestants go on final dates before the finale. So Liberty and Jake left during one of the penultimate episodes. Having the final dates before the final votes is a much better choice strategically. It helps many viewers decide which couple to vote for. By contrast, Huda and Chris’ disastrous final date came after people already voted for them. Instead of leaving the show, since it was the finale, they stuck around as if they were still a couple.
How did Huda and Chris resolve things after that shocking final date?
While the final night usually features four loved-up couples, Huda and Chris’ breakup led him to spend his last night sleeping in Soul Ties. Alas, they still had to do the typical couple things, like a choreographed dance and declarations of love!
Before the winners are announced, the finalist couples write speeches for each other, called declarations of love. And Chris and Huda had to do that! I truly couldn’t believe producers still made them write these vows. But the two made sure to compliment one another, ending things on a much more positive note than the night before. For instance, Chris complimented Huda as a mother, while she thanked him for not judging her as a single mom.
You would think their breakup would automatically make Huda and Chris disqualified. But again, the votes were tallied before the final date! So, to everyone’s surprise, Huda and Chris got third place. I can’t imagine how Iris Kendall and Pepe Garcia felt coming in fourth by comparison. Maybe next year producers will schedule final dates before the votes to avoid this happening again?
Ultimately, the Season 7 finale made history for other, happier reasons. Amaya Espinal and Bryan Arenales are the first Dominican couple to win Love Island USA. This is also the first time two bombshell contestants won LI USA. Usually, at least one member of the winning couple is an OG.
As for Huda and Chris, despite being third wheels to three couples, they seemed to enjoy themselves. Like everyone else, they did a celebratory jump into the villa’s pool at the end. Now, we’ll have to see how things are between them at the reunion, which airs August 25.
