Huda Mustafa is Not the Villain on Love Island USA — Opinion

Every reality TV show needs a villain and many Love Island USA viewers are convinced Huda Mustafa is that girl. Her toxic romance with Jeremiah Brown kept our eyes glued to the screen and our Love Island group chats active. Huda and Jeremiah both displayed unhealthy habits in their relationship, but Huda took most of the brunt on social media. Fans on TikTok criticized her every move and speculated she could have a personality disorder. The hate became so intense that her friends started to come forward to defend her, saying the TV edit was not an accurate depiction of the girl they know in real life.

I’ve never understood the Huda hate. Sure, she’s had a few bad moments, but that’s relatively common on Love Island. It’s not abnormal for one of the islanders to crash out over a failed romance and say some things they regret. Rob Rausch literally acted like Andrea Carmona was sentenced to death when she was eliminated in Season 6. So, what’s with all the Huda hate? I don’t think Huda is the villain people want her to be. Here’s why.

It didn’t take long for fans to become frustrated with Huda and Jeremiah’s relationship. Their connection moved very fast, which made some viewers question whether it was authentic or not. They basically acted like a married couple after their first kiss, so I think the viewers had a right to be suspicious. But I don’t agree with where viewers placed the blame.

Many fans seem to blame Huda for the fast-paced romance, suggesting Jeremiah just got caught up in her spell. I think it’s wrong to suggest the toxicity in their relationship was solely her doing. Jeremiah refused a kiss with Yulissa Escobar on day 1, opting to focus his attention solely on Huda. He came on strong, and she followed his lead. I don’t think Jeremiah deserved to be subjected to Huda’s name-calling when the relationship fell apart, but I don’t think it’s a total mystery how she got to that point. Huda deserved some criticism for the behavior, sure, but the hate went way too far with some fans demanding she be removed from the Villa.

Thankfully, the hate seems to have turned a corner and more fans are coming forward to defend Huda. Viewers are making edits on TikTok, saying Huda should not be judged for a few bad moments. I agree!

Jeremiah’s exit ushered in a new beginning for Huda. She now has the freedom to move on and explore new connections. In Casa Amor, she coupled up with fitness coach JD Dodard. When host Ariana Madix asked what made him choose Huda, he shared that he like her fiery personality.

“I sense that fire in her. It really intrigues me,” he said.

I’m glad to see Huda letting go of the past and diving into something new. She isn’t holding onto the past, and she’s letting go of resentment. She even delivered a sweet goodbye message to her “ex” on Cely Phone, the Love Island After Show.

“I cherished everything that we had,” she told him. “Remember that we all love you. I want you to know that you have a family for life.”

Huda’s friends are standing up for her on social media

On June 20, an alleged former friend of Huda’s came forward to defend her on TikTok. The user claimed she went to high school with the Love Island star and told fans to “end the Hurricane Huda hate.”

“I think she’s really getting a bad edit,” she said. “Huda and I, we were friends over a decade ago. We were not friends after high school. We grew apart…But before that, she definitely had a flare for dramatics … but she was never a mean girl. She was never a bully. She was never going out of her way to bring people down or be a name-caller.”

We’ll have to wait until Huda is out of the Villa to know if the user actually did know Huda in high school.

Love Island USA is available to stream on Peacock.
