It looks like the game may soon be afoot! Banijay-backed Remarkable Entertainment is in the process of developing a reality show competition based on Sherlock Holmes! The working title is Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock: The Detective Academy. And we’re here for it!
Arthur Conan Doyle’s ubiquitous detective is famous the world over and has entertained fans on television and the silver screen (hello, Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr.). And now, Sherlock is joining the realm of reality competitions. Putting two great things together can only result in greatness right?
How could a Sherlock Holmes reality competition TV series work?
This reality show will require contestants to keep their wits about them! They will be tasked with following in the great detective’s footsteps. They will need to use a logical method of deduction to solve mysteries.
According to Deadline, Remarkable Entertainment struck an exclusive deal with The Arthur Conan Doyle estate to develop the format.
The company is currently keeping mum about the details. They did say that the show will “test players’ powers of deduction and logic as they attempt to solve puzzling crimes from the world of Sherlock Holmes.” The show is promising to be authentic and immersive. It will be going to UK broadcasters and eventually the international market. And hey, if Traitors is any indication, people love a good mystery!
Tamara Gilder and Cat Lawson from Remarkable shared that the partnership with the estate opens the door to the rich universe of an iconic and universally loved IP. “There is simply no greater figure in detective fiction,” they shared. “Sherlock Holmes defined the genre and continues to inspire new generations of detectives around the world.”
This new move follows in the footsteps of big players and producers tapping into well-known IP for new unscripted shows. Netflix, which created the Squid Games reality competition based on its hit show, is working on a series based on the board game Monopoly and potentially one based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Meanwhile, Remarkable is enjoying success in the reality competition space being behind the musical reality show on Netflix, Building the Band.
