Big Brother is a tricky game, and not every player survives the house unscathed. It’s easy to make a mistake in Big Brother. The social dynamics are hard to navigate, and the twists make everything more complicated. While some players are able to recover from their strategic faux pas, others are haunted by the move that cost them the grand prize.

Misused Vetos, HOH reign flops, messy gameplay. There are many ways for a player to screw up their Big Brother game. Over the years, there have been countless disastrous moves that cost players money and their dignity. Let’s take a look at some of the worst moves in BB history…

Marcellas not using the POV on himself

Marcellas Reynolds risked his game when he chose not to use the Power of Veto to save himself at the final five in Big Brother 3. The Fashion Designer was nominated alongside Amy Crews, whom he believed was going home. He chose not to use the Veto, believing his allies off the block would keep him safe. Unfortunately, they betrayed him, and Marcellas was sent packing. In his defense, it was the first season the POV was used, and the players were still getting used to its power. But still, that’s gotta hurt.

Repeatedly nominating yourself for the block – Tucker and Kelley

Big Brother 26 houseguest Tucker Des Lauriers caused quite a stir in the BB community. There is no doubt he played a fearless and unpredictable game. He routinely volunteered himself for the block, knowing the odds of beating his fellow houseguests in a competition were highly in his favor. He took himself off the block time and time again, proving to be a dangerous player in the house. Some fans applauded Tucker for playing boldly, others criticized his gameplay, suggesting he tanked his game for no reason.

I’ve never been a huge fan of “competition beasts” in Big Brother, especially when they win a staggering number of unnecessary comps to boost their ego then throw a pity party when the house starts targeting them. If Tucker was a player that was excluded from alliances or declared a target from day one, I would support his blind ambition to win, but that was not the case. The house loved him. He would not have seen the block if he did not routinely offer himself to the HOH. He put himself in a position to win out before the jury phase even began. His need to flex his natural athleticism potentially cost him $750,000.

You would think that BB fans would watch Tucker’s arc and realize that his strategy, while fun to watch, is not sustainable. But you would be wrong. BB27 houseguest, Kelley Jorgensen, is basically Tucker 2.0. She volunteers herself for the block week after week. She’s managed to save herself from eviction by winning multiple competitions, but if her lucks runs out, she’s toast. She’s obsessed with “building her resume,” but appears blissfully unaware that disguising your threat level is a huge part of BB.

Taking the wrong person to final two – Cody and Makensy

Imagine you win the final competition in Big Brother, and you are faced with a choice of who to bring with you to the final two. You can take the person you know you can beat, or you can take the person who, yes, you have been loyal to throughout the game, but will absolutely come out victorious. Now, imagine sacrificing a huge sum of money because of an unshakable loyalty to a person you’ve known for one summer. Cody Calafiore and Makensy Manbeck chose loyalty over money when they chose their final two pick. They stand by their decision, but man, that’s a lot of money to sacrifice for a new friendship.

Kaysar letting go of the button

In Big Brother 6, Kaysar Ridha made the fatal mistake of trusting Jennifer Vasquez. The two were head-to-head in an HOH competition with no end in sight. Kaysar ended up striking a deal with Jennifer to end the competition. She promised him and his allies safety in exchange for power. Unfortunately for Kaysar, Jennifer did not keep her promise. She used the backdoor method to send Kaysar out the door … again.
