Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Tennis star Martina Navratilova should learn to quit while she’s ahead. Unfortunately, she speaks her mind, and now critics are slamming her for her latest tone-deaf comments. This time, the subject of her commentary is Britain’s Katie Boulter.
This isn’t the first time Martina’s gotten backlash for her comments. This season on Real Housewives of Miami, viewers are calling out her and her wife, Julia Lemigova, quite a bit. You’d think Martina would have learned to keep things to herself.
Martina Navratilova suggested Katie Boulter retire and “have babies”
Recently, British tennis player Katie had a disappointing turn at the US Open. She was knocked out in the first round after losing to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. It’s her 15th defeat this year (out of 32 matches). It is not a good showing for the tennis player.
It also means that Katie failed to get past the second round in the singles category of any Grand Slam for the second consecutive year. In previous grand slams this year, she was knocked out in the second round.
Because of this, Katie was a point of discussion on Sky Sports. Experts shared their views on how she should move forward. Ryan Harris said that, despite the challenges, he thought Katie was looking to end the season on a high. To do that, he said she was going to “have to get some matches in. She’s going to have to get that match count up.”
Martina, a former world number one player, had less constructive tennis advice. She jokingly suggested Katie hang it up. “Maybe just get married, have babies, and be done with it. No more stress,” Martina said.
Ryan pointed out that having kids does not mean less stress. Bless him. Honestly, Martina didn’t just insult Katie with her words, but also all mothers out there struggling under the stress of raising a family. She should know better, considering she and Julia just adopted two young boys.
But then again, if Martina doesn’t see anything wrong with sharing transphobic posts on X, formerly Twitter, she certainly won’t see why she missed the mark here.
