However, Rob Shuter’s exclusive report on Substack revealed that the palace advisers did not think it was a good idea to invite Barack and Michelle Obama without inviting the Trumps. Therefore, the concern, per the sources, was potential political fallout.
In the end, the Obamas did not attend. They did, however, send their wishes while Markle and Prince Harry moved ahead with a carefully managed guest list for what turned out to be a global event.
A palace insider told Shuter, “Meghan was desperate to have the Obamas there.” They explained, “She saw them as everything she and Harry aspired to be — powerful, modern, beloved.” Meanwhile, another source added that the risk of offending Washington was too high if they left Trump out, stating, “It would’ve caused an international incident.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in May 2019, and their wedding was a grand spectacle. They married at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, with a ceremony that blended royal tradition with American touches.
