Prince Harry’s Idea of a ‘Modern’ Monarchy Was Flatly Refused — Source

Prince Harry reportedly suggested a “Modern” monarchy that would allow him and Meghan Markle to live in California while occasionally representing the royal family. According to #ShuterScoop, Buckingham Palace aides “immediately dismissed” the idea after Harry discussed it privately with King Charles, reaffirming that there would be no return as part-time royals.

Reportedly, Prince Harry recently held a private “54-minute meeting with King Charles at Clarence House”, marking a step toward reconciliation after years of strained relations. However, the monarch has confirmed that the Duke of Sussex will not return to active royal duties. Palace sources have stated that Harry will not be allowed a “half-in, half-out” role, emphasizing that serving the monarchy is a full-time responsibility with no middle ground for combining official duties with private business ventures.

According to Times, the decision highlights ongoing tensions within the royal family following Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties in 2020, commonly referred to as “Megxit”. Their choice to pursue media projects and independent charitable work abroad, particularly in the United States, created a significant rift with senior royals.

According to sources, the King reaffirmed that the late Queen Elizabeth II’s rule remains in effect: members of the royal family cannot perform official duties while earning money from “commercial ventures”.

The monarch reportedly made it clear that there is no room for compromise, stating that the Duke cannot return in a “half-in, half-out” capacity. Sources noted that King Charles is upholding his late mother’s decision, maintaining that participation in royal duties requires full commitment, and no official role can be combined with private business interests.

While public gestures of reconciliation have occurred, including the recent meeting, palace sources confirm that the formal structure of royal duties “remains closed” to Prince Harry. And the rules established by Queen Elizabeth II continue to govern the expectations of all senior royals.
