Week 8 of Dancing with the Stars just premiered and fans are going crazy, and they have every right to be. For starters, Danielle Fishel, a strong, consistent contestant was unexpectedly cut from the competition. And, after multiple electric performances, no one was given a perfect score last night.
One of the biggest outrages in the judging was with the Paso Doble between Alix Earle and her pro dancer Val Chmerkovskiy. It was energetic, clean, and easily pushed them as the pair to beat. They were one point away from a perfect score, but were stopped by guest judge Flavor Flav, who gave them a 9. People are upset, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer just made it clear that it wasn’t his fault.
Flavor Flav wasn’t allowed to change his score on Dancing with the Stars
Flavor recently reflected on his experience judging the episode and had some tea to spill. Apparently, he, like the rest of the panel, thought Alix and Val’s performance was worth giving a 10. But, thanks to a slip off the paddle, it didn’t exactly turn out that way.
“I gave them a nine which was an accident. I really wanted to give them a 10, but they wouldn’t let me change it,” he explained to PEOPLE.
The music legend continued, adding that he really did try to rectify his score to what he thought the dance deserved.
“I went, ‘No. No, that was an accident, I don’t want to give them a nine. I want to give them a 10.’ But they was like, ‘Flavor, it’s already locked in. You can’t change it.’ I’m like, ‘Oh man.’ That’s how the game goes.”
Well, with this new information, this performance just became the first unofficial (but official) perfect score in DWTS history. A superlative that definitely sums up the level of pure mayhem this season has been.
Nevertheless, the competition is full steam ahead to Week 9, which is the Quarterfinals. Only seven duos remain and we’re probably wondering the same thing: Is Andy Richter seriously going to make it to the end?
Dancing with the Stars airs on Tuesdays, at 8 p.m. on ABC and Disney+. It streams on Hulu the next day.
