Prince Harry Thanks Toronto for Wife Meghan Markle: ‘Touchstones in My Life’

Prince Harry has a lot of love for Canada, especially when it comes to the city of Toronto.

On November 6, Harry attended the 17th annual True Patriot Love Foundation National Tribute Dinner in Toronto. He was there for a Remembrance Day event, the British equivalent of the US Veterans Day.

The prince, a veteran and founding patron of the Invictus Games, fondly remembered his wife Meghan Markle’s Canadian connection. “This city will always mean a great deal to me,” Harry shared in his speech. “You provided a wife for me and you hosted the Invictus Games in 2017, touchstones in my life both professionally and personally.”

After first being set up by friends in London, Harry soon became a regular visitor to Toronto when the couple started dating. Meghan lived in the Canadian city while filming her TV show Suits.

At first, they enjoyed staying under the radar, even attending a Halloween party in costume with Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie. Finally, the couple went public when they attended the 2017 Invictus Games together in Toronto.

In his speech, Harry shared that Meghan “”lived in Toronto for years and has deep affection for this city. So much so that many people around the world believe she’s Canadian. So I think we can forgive a native Californian for her Dodgers loyalty, even if just for one evening,”

But while Meghan may be a Dodgers fan, some considered it disloyal that the Duke of Sussex didn’t support Canada’s Toronto Blue Jays in the World Series. He brought up “hatgate” at the beginning of his speech.

“Before I begin, I think it’s important we address the blue-hatted elephant in the room,” he said. “I am truly sorry for wearing a Dodgers hat. No excuses, but there were two reasons for wearing it. First, our host that night was the owner of the Dodgers, and I believed it was the polite thing to do.”

“Second,” he added, “the 900,000-watt floodlights shining down on an ever-increasing bald spot … Given that level of scrutiny, I think I’d even have worn a Yankees cap. Well, maybe not a Yankees cap, but you get my dilemma.”

Though the royal couple have lived comfortably in the US for the past five years, some sources think a change may be coming. Reportedly, Prince William wants to remove Harry and Meghan’s royal titles, as King Charles recently did to his brother Andrew.
