We all need a hype person every now and again. And for Rosamund Pike, that happened to be in the form of none other than Tom Cruise. She recently revealed that she was terrified about playing the lead role in Gone Girl. But everyone’s favorite (?) scientologist stepped in and gave her a much-needed ego boost.
Rosamund Pike felt she “wasn’t up to” the Gone Girl role, before Tom Cruise stepped in
Rosamund told the story on Friday’s episode of The Graham Norton Show. She revealed that she was really nervous before starting on the 2014 movie, but Tom helped calm her nerves. The pair had previously worked together on 2012’s Jack Reacher.
She said: “The night before I started filming Gone Girl, I was so frightened, and I couldn’t sleep. So at four in the morning I wrote to Tom saying I wasn’t up to the role and I was terrified. And he sent me the kindest letter immediately saying, ‘You’ve got this and you are ready.’ ”
She added: “It was such a significant gesture from someone with such a level of fame.”
Clearly, Tom was right. Rosamund went on to be nominated for her first Academy Award for her performance.
The actress also told a funny anecdote about her Bond girl audition. She revealed that she’d never actually seen any of the movies, and went to the meeting with an ’80s evening dress. It was “kind of big silk taffeta, you know, like a peacock, had huge roses on it,” she said.
She said she showed the costume designers her outfit choice, to which they replied “Well, that is a very, very beautiful dress, but Bond girls wear things more like this…”
The actress realized in that moment how woefully mistaken she’d been: “And they held up what looked to me like five pieces of string,” she said.
Rosamund shared the sofa with Glen Powell during the episode – who recently received some very public support from pal Tom.
