Eddie Murphy recently highlighted a key difference between himself and Nick Cannon. In a new interview, he touched upon the comparisons fans often made between them, particularly the fact that they had multiple children. Murphy revealed that when he was younger, he didn’t have as many kids compared to Cannon.

Eddie Murphy recently sat down for an interview where he reflected on his nearly 50-year entertainment career and his family life. In his conversation with PEOPLE, the Beverly Hills Cop actor revealed he didn’t expect 10 children but called it “the best thing” to happen to him. “If you can afford that many kids, you should have as many kids as you can afford,” he added. “That is fun.”
Eddie Murphy said he never advised Nick Cannon — who has 12 children — to have multiple kids. Although he was unsure if he had met the fellow comedian, he was certain about not offering him parenting advice. Nonetheless, he was happy for him.
“People always say, ‘Nick Cannon, he got, like, 12 kids,'” Murphy added. “I didn’t have that many when I was that young. God bless him.”
The Shrek star has 10 children from multiple partners. He fathered his oldest son, Eric, in 1989 with girlfriend Paulette McNeely. Murphy later welcomed another son, Christian, in 1990 with Tamara Hood. With his ex-wife, Nicole Mitchell, he fathered one son, Myles Mitchell (b. 1992), and four daughters — Bria (b. 1989), Shayne Audra (b. 1994), Zola Ivy (b. 1999), and Bella Zahra (b. 2002).
In 2007, Murphy and ex-girlfriend Melanie Brown, a.k.a. Mel B, welcomed Angel Iris Murphy Brown. Between 2016 and 2018, Murphy welcomed two children, Izzy Oona and Max Charles, with Australian model Paige Butcher.
Meanwhile, Cannon fathered 12 children from his marriages to/relationships with Mariah Carey, Brittany Bell, Alyssa Scott, Bre Tiesi, Abby De La Rosa, and LaNisha Cole.
Carey gave birth to twin sons, Moroccan and Monroe. Meanwhile, Bell mothered sons, Golden Sagon and Rise Messiah Cannon, and a daughter, Powerful Queen. Further, Scott welcomed a son, Zen — who passed away when he was just five months old in 2021 — and a daughter, Halo Marie Cannon.
De La Rosa gave birth to twin sons, Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir, and a daughter, Beautiful Zeppelin. Meanwhile, Tiesi welcomed a son, Legendary Love, and Cole mothered a daughter, Onyx Ice Cole.
