Royal Butler Reveals How Late Queen Elizabeth Handled Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s Supposed Rift

Before she passed, one of Queen Elizabeth’s deepest desires was for Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton to settle their differences. According to her former butler, the queen wanted her family to live together in harmony, as a united front.

In the years following Prince Harry’s engagement and marriage to the American actress, relations between the two women became strained. After receiving star treatment in Hollywood, Meghan found herself confronted with a system where she could never be the star. Despite their initial attempts at friendship, Kate and Meghan found themselves at odds.

Though unsuccessful, her former butler, Grant Harrold, shared that the queen’s goal was to preserve unity within the royal household.

At first the two Duchesses and their husbands, Prince William and Prince Harry, were dubbed the “Fab Four.” They publicly presented a united front, even while the women’s relationship was faltering.

But according to Grant, the queen worked to keep things copacetic in the royal family. “If she sensed any tension, particularly between Kate and Meghan, she would have quietly stepped in to try and smooth things over,” he told Radar Online. “Her focus was always on preserving a strong and united front, especially among the younger generation of royals … [She] would have done everything in her power to make sure family disagreements never overshadowed duty.”

“As Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship grew more serious, it’s possible that dynamics behind the scenes began to shift,” Grant continued. “The Queen would have taken note of any signs of strain. If there was even a hint of things not being right, she would have done what she could to resolve it.”

“[Elizabeth] believed that discretion and calm were the best tools for family management,” a senior courtier confirmed. “She didn’t interfere openly but operated quietly, always putting unity first.”

The queen always believed that strong leadership and service required family unity. “She could see the strain between the Sussexes and the Cambridges and was deeply saddened by it,” revealed another palace source.
