King Charles’ Goddaughter India Hicks Reveals She Has ‘Worryingly Fast-Moving’ Skin Cancer

India Hicks, King Charles’ goddaughter, revealed a diagnosis of skin cancer on her lower calf. She classified this as “a worryingly fast-moving patch.” She discovered the cancer after undergoing a medical procedure.

India’s mother is Lady Pamela Hicks, a descendant from the House of Mountbatten. She is also a first cousin of the late Prince Philip, King Charles’ father. Lady Pamela is the oldest living descendant of Queen Victoria.

India, who is 58, shared the announcement in her Substack on December 2. “The test results from a recent skin-cancer operation came back, and the news was … not great,” she wrote. “Not dramatic-movie-scene not great, but just unsettlingly not great. The kind of news that makes the world blur slightly at the edges. I reacted the way most people do: a strange mixture of calm practicality and a little private terror. You tell yourself you’re fine, you make tea, you answer emails, all while a small internal voice is whispering, ‘what if it’s worse than we think?’”

A Miami doctor treated India quickly with Mohs surgery. This procedure continuously cuts away affected skin layers, removing all signs of cancer. “The procedure itself was only relatively uncomfortable. You sit there with an open incision in your leg while they whisk the tissue to the pathology lab. And then comes the hardest part: waiting,” India recalled. “You feel fine, you’re chatting, you’re scrolling your phone, and yet everything hinges on what’s happening in another room.”

Doctors informed India that she was fortunate, as the procedure cleared her of cancer. The doctors delivered the good news that she “was lucky” and clear of cancer.

India could travel and celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with her family, which she looks forward to. “I love the gathering, friends around the table, the loud laughter, the happy chaos,” she said.

Cancer is a common theme in the royal family. King Charles is still fighting the battle, while his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton beat her cancer last February.
