Netflix is reviving a 42-year-old competition show, but now we’re going to have to wait even longer to see it. The streamer is bringing back Star Search, the talent competition series that first aired from 1983 to 1995 with host Ed McMahon. Netflix originally set the premiere date for January 13, 2026, but they just pushed things back with zero explanation.
Netflix’s Star Search reboot release date has changed
A month before the premiere of Netflix’s Star Search reboot, the streamer shifted the premiere date by one week to January 20. Variety confirmed the news, but there’s hardly any context explaining why they pushed the date. We’ll just blame it on Warner Bros.
According to the outlet, everything else about the Star Search reboot remains intact. It will air live on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and you’ll be able to vote live for your favorite contestants. Anthony Anderson will hold down the hosting duties, and just like the original edition of the show, it will feature a handful of talent categories.
The synopsis teased, “The talent is bigger, the stakes are higher, and the format is more interactive than ever. Each episode will spotlight the best up-and-coming performers across numerous categories – music, dance, variety, comedy, magic, and juniors – as they compete head to head for their shot at stardom.”
Of course, Star Search cemented itself in pop culture history because served as an early platform for future A-listers, like Beyoncé and Britney Spears. After ending its original run in 1995, CBS briefly revived it for one season in 2003.
Netflix’s revival of the long-departed series is its latest attempt to get into the world of talent competition shows. Earlier this year, they debuted the first season of Building the Band, which was like a singing version of Love Is Blind. They also just launched a Simon Cowell show about discovering a new boy band. Surely, one of these ideas will stick!
Star Search premieres on Netflix on January 20 at 9/8c.
