Angelina Jolie has spoken openly about embracing physical changes following major health decisions. The actress underwent a double mastectomy in 2013, which resulted in permanent scarring. Rather than concealing them, she chose to show the scars during her Time Magazine photoshoot, using the platform to highlight shared experiences among women who have undergone similar procedures.

Around 2012, doctors diagnosed Jolie with a BRCA1 gene mutation, which significantly increased her risk of developing breast cancer later in life. As a result, the 50-year-old chose to undergo preventive surgery in 2013. Despite the emotional and physical toll, Jolie continued her acting career and appeared in several major films, including the Maleficent franchise.
Jolie remains active professionally and is awaiting the release of her upcoming film, Couture, which reflects many of her real-life struggles. In the film, she portrays an American filmmaker who is diagnosed with breast cancer.
Jolie, who underwent a similar experience in real life, posed boldly for the cover of Time Magazine to advocate for women who have faced comparable health challenges. In a subsequent interview, she explained the intention behind the photoshoot (via Time France).
“I share these scars with many women I love,” Jolie said. “And I’m always moved when I see other women share theirs. I wanted to join them, knowing that TIME France would be sharing information about breast health, prevention, and knowledge about breast cancer.”
In addition to discussing the Time cover, Jolie also spoke about her upcoming film. The Interrupted actress said she felt an immediate connection to her character, Maxine Walker, after reading the script. She also praised director Alice Winocour’s dedication to her craft.
Couture premiered at several film festivals in September 2025. The film is still awaiting both a theatrical and OTT release.
