The Love Island villa might be headed for the big screen. The word on the street is that ITV America, the company that produces Love Island USA, wants to develop a movie that takes place in the Love Island universe. We know that sounds wild, but there’s a real chance this could come to fruition.
ITV America are said to be floating the idea of Love Island: The Movie
Although Love Island got its start in the UK, the popularity of Love Island USA has the creators itching to milk the IP for everything that it’s worth. ITV America CEO, David George, spoke to Deadline about his bold vision for the franchise.
David said, “Why are we not taking Love Island and figuring out how we’re going to translate that into the movie world? There may be something going there. I can’t even begin to tell you what it is, but there are those types of conversations.”
According to David, the success of Love Island USA Season 6 felt like a “lightning bolt,” and he said it helped him realize that they weren’t just dealing with a regular, run-of-the-mill dating show. He said it operates more like a sporting event. They want to leverage its success in any way they can.
So, what exactly would a Love Island movie look like? They haven’t gotten that far yet, but David also oversees the scripted side of ITV America. He’s got writers at his disposal and feels that instead of creating something new, they should lean into their existing IP.
“We are open to expanding the possibilities of what that brand is,” David added.
So, we could see a villa overrun with zombies or a murder mystery unfolding among the Islanders. Or maybe we’ll see a fictitious love story on the big screen, where the winners actually have a successful relationship after leaving the villa.
