Let’s be honest. The Wall might be one of the cheesiest game shows on television right now, but you’ve got to give it to them. They’re doing a lot of good.
The Chris Hardwick-hosted game show has given away over $35 million in the last five seasons. Season 6 premieres tonight, and a 9/11 first responder could be next in line for a big prize.
The Wall could be about to change someone’s life
If you haven’t seen The Wall, it’s basically like a giant game of high-stakes Plinko. A team of two stands on opposite sides of a four-story pegboard, aka The Wall. Their goal is to bank as much money as possible by dropping balls down the wall and correctly answering trivia questions.
The cheesiness comes into play when the contestants give lengthy, emotional monologues about how badly they need the money. Decider got a sneak peek at the upcoming Season 6 premiere, where a man named Seth Hardeman will step into the grand tradition.
Steven was one of the police officers who rushed to the Pentagon after the 9/11 attacks 25 years ago. These days, he’s a security guard at an elementary school. He and his college-aged son, Seth Hardeman, hope to become millionaires after their run-in with The Wall.
“I’m playing the number 6 for all the kids at Triangle Elementary,” he said in the clip, before really laying it on thick.
“Chris, there have been at least 6 kids that have touched my heart so deeply… kids that don’t have homes,” Steven continued. “Those kids make me stronger, and I want to continue to be there for them, no matter what happens on this wall.”
Steven’s wife and his other son were sitting on the sidelines, looking prouder than ever. Meanwhile, Chris was standing there, not even trying to make himself look emotionally invested in this story.
He replied, “I know you make their lives better every day; let’s see if we can make your life better with a million dollars.”
Sure enough, Steven’s ball landed right into the million-dollar prize slot. It’s the stuff that dreams (and television) are made of! But will he be able to hang onto that money, or will he lose it all on The Wall? Tune in to find out.
The Wall airs Mondays at 9/8c on NBC. You can stream it on Peacock the next day.
