Wondering how that new Buffy the Vampire Slayer show is coming along? Well, you’re in luck. Buffy herself has given an update on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. Sarah Michelle Gellar clarified the concept behind it the show, and why she was convinced to do it after saying she never would.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale is a “continuation”
Sarah made an appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast on Wednesday. While chatting to pal Evan Ross Katz, the conversation turned to the new Buffy show.
She said of the upcoming instalment: “It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot. It’s a continuation.”
As the name suggests, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale will focus on a new slayer, though Sarah will also feature in a recurring role.
Explaining why it should be seen as a continuation, she added: “I think so, because where is she now in this world and what is this world that Buffy lives in with her and without her. It’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away.”
The actress also revealed that she had previously said she would “never” make a new Buffy show. But she was convinced by Chloé Zhao, who will direct. She said: “Chloé Zhao came to me, and not just her passion, because I’ve seen people with passion before, but she knew how to go into the world. She knew what the world was and she knew the why. And that was the first time I said, ‘Maybe … could I possibly do this?'”
Sarah spoke about the speedy progress the show was making in March last year. She told People: “We’ve set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I’d anticipated. But it’s going to be a process, I think. To do it the way it needs to be done, everyone has to be patient with all of us, because this isn’t something that [will just happen].”
