Spencer Pratt is making his bid as the next Mayor of Los Angeles. As an LA resident, this former reality star is not a fan of Gavin Newsom, California’s 40th governor. In fact, Spencer dislikes this man’s actions so much that, last year, he started heavily trolling Governor Newsom online. Spencer became so invested in political efforts that he is now leaping into politics himself, as he hopes to be the change he wishes to see within his community.
To win, Spencer first needs to beat Karen Bass, the current democratic mayor of LA. If he succeeds, thereby taking over her spot as the newest mayor of LA, well, the rest of this sentence is still unwritten. Formerly stirring the pot on The Hills, Spencer often breaks tradition. Sometimes his tries are outside the lines (yeah, yeah).
But Spencer can’t live that way anymore. Here’s everything we know.
Spencer Pratt is running for mayor after historically trolling Gavin Newsom
Yesterday, Spencer officially announced his candidacy. “I’ve waited a whole year for someone to step up and challenge Karen Bass, but I saw no fighters. Guess I’m gonna have to do this myself.”
On January 7, Spencer delivered a stirring speech at a neighborhood rally, citing the LA wildfires as his motivator. This date was significant, as it heralded the start of these fires, which burned over the course of three long weeks. These fires killed twelve people alone in the Palasaides, where Spencer resides, while destroying more than 13,000 homes in the nearby vicinity. Afterward, Spencer used his platform to call out Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass, who, he says, exhibited a “total breakdown in prevention, precaution, and leadership.”
To date, Spencer remains an active thorn in these politicians’ sides. He has even filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming that the nearby Santa Ynez reservoir was empty and out of commission. As for Governor Newsom, Spencer has publicly challenged him to release his texts regarding his responses to these fires. Spencer has also accused his office of actively covering up their mishandlings.
That’s why I am running for mayor,” Spencer said, “to expose the system.”
Spencer and Heidi Pratt lost their home to the LA Wildfires
The 2025 LA Wildfires marked a major turning point in the lives of Spencer and his wife, Heidi Montag. They both feel strongly about the events that unfolded last January. And that’s because the wildfires consumed not only their home, where they were raising their two young sons, but also the nearby home of Spencer’s parents. Hence, their lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles.
From their son’s drawings to their sentimental Pratt pack photographs and toys, they lost it all to this “preventable tragedy,” they said on a recent post. Adding insult to their emotional injuries, neither their house nor their possessions were insured. Like many Californians, their insurance carrier dropped them right before the first embers sparked. On this, Spencer blamed Governor Newsom, noting that the governor created a “hostile” insurance market in California.
Spencer and Heidi relied heavily on their platforms during this horrific timeline. Heidi ramped up her music game, and many of her old singles started trending. After all, house rebuilds are expensive, so Heidi did what she could to bring home some new bacon. Meanwhile, Spencer kept his foot on the necks of politicians, acting as the voice of his people via his heavily populated platform.
Is Spencer Pratt a Republican?

“Yes, it’s official,” Spencer announced, adding that his “Papers are filed, and [my] campaign is open.” If interested, his official website has since gone live. On its homepage, a serious, black-and-white headshot of Spencer appears. Underneath, the headline read, “Pacific Palisades Resident & Karen Bass’ Worst Nightmare.”
If Mayor Bass is already a known democratic mayor, does this mean that Spencer is running against her as a Republican? Not necessarily. You see, municipal races in California, including the Los Angeles mayoral election, are nonpartisan, which is also how Spencer identifies.
Despite this fact, many notable Republicans are choosing to endorse Spencer. These names include Richard Grenell, an ally of the POTUS, and Steve Hilton, the Republican candidate for governor, who hopes to oust Spencer’s never-BFF, Governor Newsom. Likewise, Spencer has joined many Republican lawmakers over on Capitol Hill, helping bring awareness while calling for a congressional investigation into the LA Wildfire responses.
Regardless of where Spencer falls within these heavily dividing party lines, the bulk of people chiming in on his nonpartisan run are positive.
What has Gavin Newsom done for California?

Like most politicians, Governor Newsom is one of those leaders whom people either love or loathe. Take this thread on Reddit. As one local stressed, his “roadside clean-up initiative is working great. The roads are noticeably cleaner throughout the state.”
He has also done all of these things, chimed in another Redditor: “Backed and signed strong firearm laws. Placed a statewide moratorium on the use of the death penalty. Put limits on police use of force. Opposed the prison-industrial complex and closed two prisons, all while ‘fighting the Tangerine Turd’ every step of the way.”
‘Oop. But on this same thread, another person argued that Governor Newsom says one thing while doing another.
Now, officially speaking, there is an official list that outlines all of Governor Newsom’s progress. Within, there are 64 notable things he has accomplished. Okay, fine, 63, since the 64th bullet point trolls President Trump, much like Spencer has often done with Governor Newsom.
It reads, “AS AMERICA’S FAVORITE GOVERNOR, GAVIN C. NEWSOM SAVED DEMOCRACY WITH BIG, BEAUTIFUL MAPS!” Nevertheless, can Spencer stack up? Only time will tell.
