Comedian Postpones Minneapolis Shows After ICE Killed a Mother: ‘So Unsafe’

John Mulaney has postponed his upcoming shows in Minneapolis, scheduled for this weekend, due to growing unrest in the city, following the fatal shooting of a woman by ICE.

Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three and a poet, was shot by an ICE officer while driving away from a protest on Wednesday. Anti-ICE demonstrations have only grown in scale since the killing.

John took to social media to address his fans in the city. He released a statement addressed to “the people of Minneapolis”. A gig was planned for this weekend, but the comedian prioritized the safety of his audience.

“What’s happening in your city is heartbreaking,” John wrote on Instagram. “I hate to postpone shows in a town going through such awful challenges and such grief, because it feels unfair to the audience.”

While expressing disappointment in the cancellation, John explained his own rationale. “I don’t feel comfortable asking thousands of people each night to leave their homes, gather at the venue. And then make their way home when the situation is so unsafe,” the comedian continued.

The SNL alum offered alternative dates for ticket holders in April of this year, as well as refunds.

“I am sorry to anyone who is disappointed. I know a fun stand-up show could be a nice distraction, but it doesn’t sit right with me to put anyone at risk.” The comedian will continue his “Mr. Whatever” tour on January 15th in St. Louis, before taking the tour internationally.

Donald Trump’s response to the killing has been met with furor, both in Minneapolis and across the United States. Speaking to the press, Trump described the slain protester’s actions as “disorderly, obstructing, and resisting” orders. He went on to characterize the shooting as an act of “self-defense” by the ICE agent, which video of the incident disputes.
