Serena Williams’ husband just came to her defense on social media after critics accused her of bleaching her skin. Skin bleaching is a cosmetic practice that uses chemicals to reduce melanin with the aim of lightening dark areas of skin or achieving a paler skin tone overall.
Alexis Ohanian blasted those accusing Serena of bleaching her skin
After Serena posted a sweet family photo on social media, critics flooded her comments section with accusations that she lightens her skin. In response, husband Alexis Ohanian – best known as the co-founder of Reddit – took to X to call the rumors out.
“Where are all the comments from idiots who don’t understand how photography lighting works,” he wrote on X.
To that, someone else said: “Alexis wants Black people to believe we don’t know what photography lighting looks like vs blatant skin lightening.”
Thankfully, Serena’s husband had another comeback. “Or: photos from the same event can look different based on lighting,” he added.
Elsewhere, fans had nicer things to say about Serena’s family photo. “They look amazing,” someone said on X. “Why on earth would anyone have a problem with these pictures?!”
This is not the first time that Serena has been confronted with such speculation. In 2024, she posted a video of herself and Alexis online. It later went viral on socials, with plenty of people questioning the tennis star’s skin tone. “She looks lighter,” someone said on X in response to the video. “What is she doing to her skin?” another added.
Noticing the commentary, Serena followed up with a reply of her own. In a GRWM tutorial on Instagram a little while later, she addressed claims that she lightens her skin. “That is actually my skin color,” she said. “And no, for you haters out there, I do not bleach my skin.”
Serena went on: “There is a thing called sunlight, and in that sunlight, you get different colors.”
