Prince Harry Gets Emotional in Court Over Meghan Markle ‘Misery’

In a London court today, Prince Harry went up against The Daily Mail newspaper and spoke about his wife, Meghan Markle.

The trial, which began two days ago, is expected to last nine weeks and cost more than $50 million. Today was Harry’s first day in the witness box.

Testifying for the first time, Harry accused the Daily Mail of making his wife Meghan’s life “an absolute misery.” Witnesses reported that Harry became visibly emotional on the witness stand as he made the claim in his landmark privacy case.

Prince Harry isn’t alone in his suit against the Daily Mail. He’s joined in the suit by other public figures, including Liz Hurley, Elton John, and David Furnish.

In their suit, the plaintiffs said they became “victims of abhorrent criminal activity and gross breaches of privacy.” Those breaches of privacy included the Daily Mail hiring private investigators to dig up dirt for publication.

Meanwhile, Harry’s witness statement was read in court. It claimed the paper had accused the Duke of Sussex of using “drugs and drinking to sell more … papers.”

During his testimony, a lawyer for Associated Newspapers pointed out that Harry hadn’t complained about any of the articles at the time.

Harry agreed, though at that time he’d been part of “The Firm,” a reference to the working royal family. He explained that he wasn’t allowed to say anything under the rule of “never complain and never explain.”

In 2020, Harry and Meghan moved to California, after the British press reportedly became unbearable for Meghan. But in recent days, the prince has seemed to long for not only reconciliation with his father King Charles, but for a return to his home.
