Now, her own children are watching her work, and her daughter has the same question as millions of others have had for years. Recently, she revealed that her four-year-old daughter, Mae, asked an “age-old question” after watching the movie, “A Cinderella Story.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair on January 20, Hilary Duff sat down to watch some scenes from her beloved projects across TV and films. Inevitably, one of those scenes was from the 2004 romcom, “A Cinderella Story,” in which she appeared as Sam Montgomery against Chad Michael Murray’s Austin.
During the walk down memory lane, Duff revealed that her daughter, Mae, had watched the movie. She said that the little girl did not hold back her thoughts about one questionable plot point. The scene in question was the iconic ballroom school dance sequence, for which Duff wore a tiny mask over her eyes, leaving Austin confused about her identity.
Fans have wondered for the past two decades how Sam had pulled that move. Mae has the same question. The “Lizzie McGuire” alum said, “My 4-year-old has watched this movie and also picked up on like, how could he not know it’s you in that mask? I was like, ‘It’s the age-old question, honey.’ And she’s like, ‘But it’s you. You are right there. I don’t understand. How does he not know?’ I’m like, ‘I know.'”
Duff shares daughters Mae James Bair, Banks Violet Bair and Townes Meadow Bair with husband, Matthew Koma. She is also the mother of Luca Cruz Comrie, the son she welcomed with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie, in 2012. In March 2024, she took to Instagram to pen a heartfelt birthday wish for Mae. The post featured an adorable video of the young kid set to Natalia Cole’s “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love).”
