Big news for fans of the Olympics! You might be able to stream the sporting event on Netflix soon. But don’t get your hopes up for the Winter Games.
Late last year, Netflix agreed to acquire the film and television studio operations of Warner Bros. Discovery in a multi-billion-dollar deal. The details haven’t been ironed out yet, but that deal could mean the streaming giant has rights to air the Olympic Games in future.
The Olympics could stream on Netflix as early as the Los Angeles 2028 Games
To recap, Netflix confirmed in December that it had “entered into a definitive agreement” to acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO.
“This acquisition brings together two pioneering entertainment businesses,” the streaming giant went on. “[The deal combines] Netflix’s innovation, global reach and best-in-class streaming service with Warner Bros.’ century-long legacy of world-class storytelling.”
Beyond storytelling, there’s sports, too! Warner Bros. describes itself as the “home of the Olympics in Europe.” It renewed its partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2023. Now, the bosses at Netflix are in talks to stream the sporting event on its platform, per Deadline.
The current deal gives Warner Bros. access to every moment of every Olympic Games until 2032 as part of a shared arrangement with members of the European Broadcasting Union.
Speaking about the future, a source told Deadline that a decision is not expected until after this year’s Winter Games. Officially known as the XXV Winter Olympic Games and commonly known as Milano Cortina 2026, the international multi-sport event is scheduled to take place from February 6 to 22 across Lombardy and Northeast Italy.
Meanwhile, the next Summer Olympic Games, known as the LA28 Games, will take place in Los Angeles from July 14 to July 30, 2028.
