It’s the last thing a renowned American skier needed just before the Winter Olympics. In her final race before the Winter Games in Milan Cortina, Lindsey Vonn suffered a crash at a World Cup event in Switzerland. The three-time Olympic medallist was airlifted to the hospital after failing to land a jump on the upper portion of that course.
She skidded sideways into a nearby net. Lindsey could be seen bracing her left knee after receiving medical attention. This setback comes just over a week before she makes his big return to the Olympic stage.
Lindsey Vonn’s spot in the Winter Olympics is now in doubt

The 2026 Olympics were supposed to be the moment Lindsey reintroduces herself to a worldwide audience. That is now very much up in the air. Following the frightening crash, Linsey’s coach, Lund Svindal told Reuters, “She has some pain, so it’s better to have some check.” He says that the physio team checked on her and wasn’t sure if she was 100%.
It wouldn’t be the first time the 41-year-old has suffered a serious injury. In 2024, she underwent a total knee replacement on her right side to repair some damage. Her big comeback was expected to be one of the big stories heading into the women’s skiing events in Italy. Lindsey returned to the sport after a five-year hiatus. At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, she became the first American to win gold in the downhill event.
Among the other big stories at the Olympics will be in Men’s Figure Skating after Maxim Naumov earned a spot on the American team. He’d lost his parents in a plane crash in early 2025.
No word yet on whether Lindsey’s injury will prevent her from competing at the Games, but she doesn’t have much time to recover. The women’s downhill event is scheduled for February 8. Lindsey was also supposed to compete in the Super-G and Team Combined events.
