A British comedian is back on social media after a lengthy hiatus. In November 2024, John Oliver announced on Twitter that you wouldn’t be seeing him on that platform for a while. He joked about Donald Trump’s desire to impose tariffs on trade in that post.
On Monday, after more than a year away, the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight was back online, posting the program’s latest episode recorded over the weekend. The former Daily Show correspondent had some harsh words for one of the President’s most well-known friends.
John Oliver posted a takedown of Twitter on the social media platform, now known as X
Elon Musk is in John’s crosshairs for how he’s been running X. The multiple Emmy Award winner blasted the billionaire for, according to him, how things have gone downhill for the social media outlet formerly known as Twitter.
On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, John says that “a massive media platform has been shaped in the image of its poisonous owner.” John expressed skepticism that Elon will realize the mistakes the comedian believes he’s making. He added that the wealthy businessman’s brain is “thoroughly cooked by the garbage it consumes on his own sites.”
His advice to people seemed to be, indirectly, not to engage in social media, particularly X. While he made one post online Monday, it is unlikely we’ll be hearing much from John in the future. On his latest show, he jokes that his primary focus going forward will be on his OnlyFans account. While acknowledging that many have reasons for using X, John argues that many can accomplish those goals through other means, just as much as on the social media platform.
Being a comedian, John is used to roasting his share of celebrities. In February 2024, he took aim at Tom Sandoval, suggesting pigs are smarter than the reality star. John’s news satire show has been running since April 2014 and won Outstanding Scripted Variety Series at the 2025 Emmys.
TELL US – DO YOU AGREE WITH JOHN OLIVER’S THOUGHTS THAT X UNDER ELON MUSK HAS BECOME TOXIC?
