Author Tom Bower recounts the events of September 8, 2022, in his book “Betrayal.” The book claims that as the family rushed to Balmoral after word spread that the Queen’s health had worsened, a disagreement broke out over whether Markle should join Harry on the trip to Scotland.

As Hello Magazine reported, Tom Bower writes that King Charles the then-Prince, contacted both Prince William and Prince Harry and directed them toward a flight to Scotland, but he did not want Meghan Markle to come. The book claims that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex discussed plans at Frogmore Cottage. But Charles objected when he learned Markle intended to travel.
Additionally, the book claims that the situation escalated into an argument, and that Charles tried to show Markle had not been singled out by saying Princess Kate would not travel either. Bower further claims the delay caused more tension, and that William did not wait any longer before the plane left.
Harry and Markle have reportedly strongly rejected Bower’s book. In a statement that Hello Magazine shared, a spokesperson for the couple claimed, “Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation.” The spokesperson added, “He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met.”
Furthermore, they continued, “Those interested in facts will look elsewhere.” They insisted, “those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.” The Queen died later that day at Balmoral at age 96. Harry and Markle attended her funeral on September 19, 2022.
