The Express reported that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s appearance at Kris Jenner’s birthday party caused backlash. The party, held at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s Beverly Hills home, reportedly drew a major guest list, including Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, Adele, and others — but critics pointed out that it took place on Remembrance Day in the UK.
Photos of the Sussexes from inside the party spread online after Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian posted them to Instagram. However, they later disappeared after Jenner allegedly deleted them.
Variety’s Matt Donnelly spoke about the situation on The Royalist with Tom Sykes and The Daily Beast, and his comments pointed to the risk of it all as he said, “So I think to me, that’s a microcosm of what it’s like for established showbusiness people who probably want to be welcoming.” He added that even a basic social moment can become complicated.
Donnelly said, “Even extending a simple social invite turns into a five car PR pile up,” highlighting how easily the conversation can change from the event itself to the optics around it. And he argued that if a party invite can create that much attention, bigger interactions could be even more stressful.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry keep facing this challenge, and if Donnelly’s read is right, that is the reason why some celebrities may decide it is easier to keep their distance.
