The Pitt’s Noah Wyle Sets the Record Straight on Friends Audition Rumors

The Pitt star Noah Wyle is setting the record straight, and it’s quite clear that he’s in the mood to be doing it with a sense of humor. This happens to be especially true when it comes to long-circulating rumors about him auditioning for Friends. Speaking in a recent interview, he finally opened up about this and stated that his memory of the situation is “a little spotty.” But that’s definitely not all.

The Golden Globe awardee finally addressed the rumors about him auditioning for the hit ’90s sitcom, specifically for Ross Geller’s character.

During an interview with Variety, Noah Wyle denied the same and commented with a laugh, “My memory is a little spotty, but I would remember auditioning for Friends. I had a little snobbery about doing TV.” He also added some embarrassing details about auditioning for ER, stating, “I thought it was a movie, so I auditioned for it. When I found out it was a show, I didn’t really care, because I thought, ‘It’s so good, they’re going to cancel it. There’s no way this is going to last.’”

Wyle further explained how he had a very different viewpoint about having a television career back then. The 54-year-old elaborated, “But I kind of turned my nose up at the idea of a television career, which is ironic, because that’s exactly what I’ve enjoyed for the last 30 years. I love what I thought would be constricting. I found I love the consistency, and what I thought would get boring, I’ve managed to find infinite complexity. And instead of having variety, I’ve found family.”

Of course, history had other plans for Wyle’s career, as his portrayal of Dr. John Carter in 11 seasons of ER catapulted him to fame, earning him numerous accolades. Interestingly, he even had a guest appearance on Friends as part of two crossover episodes.

Meanwhile, Noah Wyle’s role as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in The Pitt since 2025 has added more feathers to his cap. Moreover, he was recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, further solidifying his position as a stellar performer in the industry.
