Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has landed himself in yet another controversy after he was spotted drinking beverages from a plastic cup at Coachella. Netizens have slammed him for using plastic products despite maintaining a contrasting stance while he held office, with users berating him for his supposedly hypocritical behavior. Notably, Trudeau attended the music festival with his girlfriend, Katy Perry.
Justin Trudeau faces backlash for using plastic cup
The ex-Liberal Party leader recently graced Coachella with his presence, attending the fan-favorite musical extravaganza with his partner.
During the duo’s outing, Katy Perry shared a snippet on Instagram of the two enjoying noodles while sipping drinks from red Solo cups. This seems to have rubbed social media users the wrong way, with a host of netizens lambasting Justin Trudeau for being a “hypocrite.” Notably, he had condemned single-use plastics on several occasions, back when he was still in power.
Trudeau even introduced a nationwide ban on its usage in 2019. While the prohibition did not apply to all plastic cups, critics did not seem to care about the intricacies of the law as they called him out recently.
One X (formerly Twitter) user slammed the ex-Canadian PM by comparing his 2019 and 2026 actions. “Justin Trudeau, Jun. 10, 2019: I’m banning Canadians from using single-use plastics! Justin Trudeau, Apr. 12, 2026: Look at me smash booze from a solo cup at Coachella!” they wrote.
Another user shared a similar sentiment in a different way, stating, “Remember when Justin Trudeau banned plastic bags and straws for Canadians – to ‘save the planet’? Now he’s posting pics using solo cups. Rules for thee, but not for me.”
Moreover, a third critic simply let out their frustration by noting, “And this a*****e is drinking out of a plastic cup, after banning them for the entire country.” Meanwhile, one user posed a question on all liberals after seeing Trudeau at Coachella by writing, “Justin Trudeau banned plastic cups in Canada, but here he is drinking from one.. Are all liberals hypocrites?”
Nevertheless, Justin Trudeau has yet to address the backlash directed at him for his Coachella outing.
