According to Variety, Sydney Sweeney appears to have been held back to showcase her strong acting skills, as the show allegedly tapped into her current public image instead. The outlet stated, “Sweeney’s fame has had a bit of an edge. And ‘Euphoria,’ now back on the air, isn’t merely allowing the actress to do her best work in years; it’s playing off of the by-now familiar Sweeney image in sharp and intriguing ways.”
Variety further mentioned that Sweeney’s Cassie Howard has been sidelined, taking on the role of an OnlyFans model and performing for an unseen audience. Her bold scenes reportedly have crossed a boundary with bold scenes, such as roleplaying a puppy and a baby. Moreover, her latest topless scene has just added fuel to the ongoing controversies.
Although her character appears to be happy, this also points toward a key discussion in reality. The show seems to contrast the real-life image Sweeney has built and presented over the years. Variety notes, “All of which exists in counterpoint to the past few years of Sweeney’s life in public. Sweeney is unabashed about leveraging her appearance and form both in art and in advertisements.”
In an earlier interview with W Magazine, the Syrn founder spoke about nude scenes and revealed that she doesn’t “get nervous” doing them. “I think that the female body is a very powerful thing. And I’m telling my character’s story, so I owe it to them to tell it well and to do what needs to be done,” Sweeney added.
