John Oliver will always tell you exactly what thinks. On the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight, John dished out one of his most critical diatribes yet on President Donald Trump. In the piece, the HBO host focused on Trump’s “rapidly declining” public persona, while examining the culture surrounding him.
The segment, which began with the rise of prediction markets, rapidly morphed into a scathing critique of Trump’s behavior. As evidence, John offered video clips showing gamblers betting on which exact words Trump will utter in a speech.
President Trump is “losing fights” according to the Last Week Tonight host
“That is not using a financial instrument to hedge risk,” the Americanized Brit said. “It’s taking advantage of a sundowning geriatric’s rapidly declining verbal abilities.”
“Oh, you bet he’s going to say the word ‘nasty,’” the host continued. “Great guess, dude. It’s one of the last 200 words he has left.”
Essentially, “prediction markets are basically platforms where you can wager on the outcome of future events,” John explained. But turning presidential rhetoric into a betting opportunity isn’t just undignified. It actually reduces the importance of serious issues.
“Honestly, that clip is unsettling on multiple fronts,” he added. “One, because the president’s harmful rhetoric is being divorced from its actual meaning.”
While mocking the absurdity of betting on everything from the chance of rain to whether Trump’s name is in the Epstein files, John found it all “unnerving.”
“It’s kind of amazing to witness someone absolutely furious that Trump’s name was redacted from the Epstein files for a completely different reason than the rest of us,” he observed.
In addition to his speech patterns, John described Trump’s odd tendency to pick losing battles. An odd campaign has been Trump’s dislike of Pope Leo XIV, for some inexplicable reason calling the pontiff “weak on crime.”
“The point is, Trump seems to be on an epic run of picking losing fights,” he concluded. “And whatever air of invincibility he had last year is fading fast.”
