Olivia Rodrigo Says Experience With ‘Real Romantic Love’ Inspired New Album

For Olivia Rodrigo, a new shift seems to have sparked an entirely new emotional direction. It seems like Rodrigo is now stepping into a softer and more complex space, and this is apparently shaped by what she calls “real romantic love.” This is exactly what she discussed in a recent conversation on “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” with Ryan Seacrest.

Olivia Rodrigo talks how experience with ‘real romantic love’ helped write new album songs

Olivia Rodrigo was recently interviewed by Ryan Seacrest on the latest episode of “On Air with Ryan Seacrest,” on YouTube. During this, she talked about her surprise Coachella 2026 performance, her career, and even opened up about her ‘real romantic love,’ which actually happened to inspire her new album. She also went into detail about her songwriting experience for her new album, “You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl In Love.”

While discussing her writing journey, Rodrigo explained, “Yeah. I mean, I started writing this album at a time in my life where I was experiencing real romantic love for the first time. And so, I was tasked with writing an album full of love songs. So, I went back, and I kind of listened to all of my favorite love songs throughout history or throughout, you know, whatever was in my Spotify playlist, that I love.” However, she further discussed how her thought process was entirely different while doing this.

Detailing on this, Rodrigo added, “Well, I realized that the thing that I loved so much about them is not that they were really happy, but they had sort of an element of sadness, fear, melancholy, or longing. And that’s what kind of made them tug at your heartstrings so much, and that’s what moved you so much. So, that was kind of the thing that I set out to do in this album. I really wanted to make a sad love song. So, when I figured out this title, I was like, yeah, it’s perfect.”
